Why Real Madrid Have 'Complete Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a crucial Champions League tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

During his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player after his debut.

"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his age and experience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his rise with interest.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the field," he said following the win at Manchester.
