When Beachgoers Fled Danger, Popular Picture Depicts Lifeguard Running ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the renowned beach as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, similar to other local residents, noticed cracking sounds echoing around the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was still too bright and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Stepping out of her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw signaled something was wrong.

As she stood on the street, speaking to a duo who had rushed up the hill still dripping wet, she became aware of someone approaching behind her. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. It was just him heading in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, and hauling that big kit and without footwear … He moved towards something that certainly every part of you would signal you to run in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully maximum effort racing.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery During Crisis

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of acts of heroism in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, police and medical teams caring for many victims.

Community Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the scene of the attack becoming a temporary medical station. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, for instance going into the surf to assist people who were struggling.

After the tragedy, messages of gratitude circulated widely. An online statement conveyed gratitude for the individuals who exhibited that “compassion will always conquer darkness”.

The squad of lifeguards later shared a message, noting they were “processing what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful sentiments and encouragement. We are touched by the care for our responders,” the organization stated. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the hope that it aids those involved.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many professional beach safety officers, stated that the crew acted heroically from the moment the shooting commenced until late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many moving stories, but the viral image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” said a local official.

“Our lifeguards exhibit dedication every day in keeping our internationally renowned shores secure for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and process the horror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much good we have witnessed in the midst of such hatred.”
