Venus Williams, 45, Awarded Special Entry for First Australian Open in Half a Decade.
A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.
A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Summer Swing
Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her last appearance in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.
"I’m excited to be back in Australia and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Williams said. "I’ve had so many incredible moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. This year will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
