Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.

Everton: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup match against the Magpies.
