UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring several human souls within her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

A World of Personal Dread

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
