Two Cuba-bound Humanitarian Vessels Declared Unaccounted For subsequent to Leaving Mexico.
A large-scale search and rescue operation is presently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of missing boats carrying relief goods traveling from Mexico to Havana.
Naval Rescue Missions Launched
Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval teams and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least nine total personnel, according to a official statement.
The boats had been scheduled to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, the statement clarified.
The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Island
The island nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation grapples with multiple power outages across the country.
"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and the two ships are fitted with suitable navigational gear and emergency beacons," a spokesperson associated with the mission commented.
The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.
Recent Aid Mission
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the island.
That boat, dubbed "a modern Granma" in reference to the vessel in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, delivered solar panels, medicines, infant formula, cycles and provisions.
Larger International Climate
Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of initiatives to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, when a fuel embargo on the island nation came into effect.
International organizations have since highlighted ""critical" shortages of supplies, with more than fifty thousand surgical procedures postponed in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Political pressure have intensified lately, with remarks from various officials highlighting the complex state of relations.
Responding to previous proposals, a high-ranking Cuban official declared that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of discussions had begun, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The maritime authorities said it was pledged to using every available asset at its reach to find the boats and ensure the security of the crews.
At this time, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
