The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
