The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Chronicling Three Weeks In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a memoir in the coming weeks called A Prisoner’s Diary, chronicling his time spent in jail.

This news was made less than two weeks following the former president was released as he contests the guilty verdict related to unlawful coordination regarding a scheme to secure election campaign funds provided by the government of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Behind bars one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he notes in an extract, indicating the account centers around his musings from isolation rather than extensive analysis of the overcrowded and crisis-hit French prison system.

“Quiet is absent, which is missing in La Santé, where one hears endless commotion,” he continues. “The noise is alas constant. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection grows stronger while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship

During his plea for freedom, the former leader was present via screen from his cell, depicting prison life as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this ordeal manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“It never crossed my mind at this stage of life, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a hardship that has been imposed on me. I admit it’s difficult, extremely tough. It affects one every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

First of Its Kind

Sarkozy, who served as France’s president for a five-year term, became the inaugural past president of an EU country and the first postwar leader from France to serve time in prison.

Prior to imprisonment he had said he would use his time to compose an account.

Books in Prison

It is not certain did he manage to read and critique the three books he took into prison: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, in which a wrongfully accused individual ends up incarcerated but escapes to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

He was placed in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a room approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet at the correctional facility in Paris. Guards were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

It was stated that he consumed solely dairy snacks during his stay because he feared prison cuisine might have been spat on. Although he had access to prepare his own meals yet he declined, based on unnamed sources. Not known is whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain daily throughout the jail term, informed the court he would be safer out of prison compared to inside. “He has faced threats against his life, listened to yells at night and emergency responses in an adjacent room during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Legal Proceedings

He entered custody last month when a French court imposed a five-year sentence for illegal collaboration over a scheme to obtain election financing for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and another court case is scheduled for the coming spring.
