Taliban Used Discarded British Gear to Locate Local Nationals That Served Alongside Western Troops, Inquiry Is Told
An informant has revealed an official investigation that the UK failed to secure sensitive equipment allowing Afghanistan's rulers to track down Afghans who collaborated with international military.
Data Breach Puts Thousands in Danger
Person A, identified as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the security lapse were instructed to move homes and switch their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the Taliban.
Lawmakers are looking into official handling of a catastrophic disclosure of private information involving almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to relocate to the UK to avoid the regime.
The Information Breach Happened
A data file with confidential details, including identities, contact details and occasionally family information, was accidentally leaked by a worker working at British military command in February 2022.
The leak became known only in August 2023, when the names of several individuals who had requested to move to Britain were posted on Facebook.

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that Afghan rulers are without comparable resources that we have,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Should they obtain mobile details, they can locate your exact position. That's precisely what the unit achieved.”
Under inquiry about whether the Taliban possessed sophisticated technology, Person A stated: “They possess all resources.”
Aftermath of the Information Leak
Early investigations presented to the investigation indicated that at least 49 family members and associates of people concerned by the incident had been killed.
A legal restriction concerning the breach was put in force in late 2023 and prevented relevant facts concerning it from media reporting until recently.
Security Recommendations
Because she was restricted, Person A and the volunteer organization associated with told Afghan families they were supporting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been breached”.
“Our suggestion was that they moved if they could and altered their phone numbers. These represented the primary information that, should militant forces obtained such data, would lead to their location being found,” Person A explained.
Contested Findings
The source argued that internal investigation conducted by a former official had been mistaken to determine that the possession of the records by militant forces was “minimally impact present danger”.
“The crucial point is that these Afghans are in hiding from the Taliban; they live secretly. The primary issue involves past work history.”
The source explained horrific treatment experienced by affected individuals, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.
“We have had toddlers who have had their arms broken to try to get relatives to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
