Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt were reported.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
