Israelis commemorate two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza peace negotiations proceed
Citizens have assembled across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the talks said that an night meeting of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.
The source said the morning session concluded without significant progress, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the two sides.
Critical Issues in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid provision
- Post-war governance of the territory
Civilian Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "No place appears as home anymore and until each abducted person return no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everybody home again, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Outside the leader's residence in the capital, people gathered to express their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel states 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Protester one woman remarked: "We must do any agreement needed for the hostages to be released. But we really want promises that we will be secure."
Research now frequently demonstrate that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to finish in exchange for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the western district, area and Nasr districts and in the east side area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"When the night comes, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack previously, shared.
"My family are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, holding each other, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me all night."
"Every second we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."
Health Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City reported it had taken in the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part district.
A different healthcare center in the south region of that area indicated another two victims had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the south region, health workers reported.
