Strong winter gusts caused walls to collapse upon flimsy tents sheltering people displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least 4 individuals. This tragedy highlights the dangerous situation that persist after more than two years of devastating airstrikes and critical shortages of humanitarian assistance.

Ceasefire Offers No Relief from Harsh Elements

Although a truce has been active from October, aid groups state that residents broadly lack the sufficient shelter required to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which took in the victims, said on Tuesday that the dead include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry stated on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy succumbed of extreme cold during the night.

"International actors has enabled us to experience loss of life in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda following the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, three people of a single family — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage granddaughter, and his son's wife — were killed when an 26-foot high wall collapsed on top of their tent in a coastal area of Gaza City. At least five others were injured in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began removing the rubble that had entombed their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Ongoing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were handing out shelter kits, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothes as well as nutrition and sanitation supplies throughout Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of Palestinians reside in improvised shelters since their houses were reduced to ruins over the course of the hostilities. Aid groups contend an insufficient amount of shelter materials are reaching Gaza during the ceasefire.

Casualty Numbers Since the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the administration, says more than 440 people have been killed by Israeli fire and their bodies brought to hospitals after the truce went into effect. The ministry maintains detailed fatality records that are seen as generally reliable by international bodies and independent experts.

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, stated on that day that no fewer than 100 minors below eighteen years old – 60 boys and forty girls – had been lost their lives since the truce began because of military operations, such as drone strikes, air raids, tank shelling and use of bullets. These numbers, he said, represented incidents where enough information had been compiled to warrant recording, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He added that many hundreds of children had been injured.

"Although 'bombings and shootings have decreased' during the ceasefire, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed reporters at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from the Strip. "Therefore what the international community now calls quiet would be viewed as a crisis anywhere else," he said.

Another Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s population of more than two million people has been fighting to keep the cold weather and bad weather away while facing shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier temporary housing, which is badly needed throughout the winter months. It’s the third cold season since the war involving the state and the group began on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked southern Israel and murdered approximately twelve hundred people and abducted 251 more into Gaza.

Gaza’s health ministry reports over seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been fatally injured in the subsequent retaliatory offensive.
