Everyday tennis enthusiasts will have the possibility to earn A$1m when they compete against world-class athletes - featuring world number one Carlos Alcaraz - in a one-point battle before the year's first major

Tournament officials of the Melbourne major have revealed the Million Dollar One Point Slam, which will match everyday competitors against top-ranked players in a elimination competition at the tournament grounds

The Unique Tournament Functions

Participants must play 'the decision-making game' to determine who takes the serve or return position, and the competitor securing the point will progress to the subsequent phase

The winner of the event will take home a significant cash prize

For comparison, players who advanced to the penultimate round of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won over a million Australian dollars

The Melbourne tournament held its first-ever quick-fire event earlier this year, but the cash prize was a smaller amount and it received minimal attention

Competition Specifics

Planners have not said exactly how the event will work, but it is expected to emulate a similar format to this year's edition

The professionals will be granted to make one service and the amateurs two times - as is the usual procedure in standard play

While it is not certain how the pairings will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the site will be the main stadium rather than the smaller Kia Arena

The final stages will be held in a evening slot instead of 1pm local time

Participation Requirements

Local players - or overseas competitors who have enrolled with the governing body - can participate in 'One Point Slam' tournaments at their community centers

The winners of the local competitions will then go into a selection process, with an everyday competitor from every state and territory chosen to take part in the 'championship round' in a evening match on the specified date

There will also be a qualifying draw in the final month which non-professionals, aspiring competitors, celebrities and sport stars can participate in

It commences on early January and the successful competitors will advance to the following day's 'championship match' with the remaining non-professionals and 10 professionals

Tournament officials said there were "additional stars to be unveiled imminently", while the event portal mentioned "well-known figures" would be taking part
